Dr. Bernstein’s Diabetes Solution$19.79 – Softcover – 544 Pages by Dr. Richard K. Bernstein Dr. Bernstein goes into great deal about the modern treatment of diabetes as well as his own plan to help diabetics maintain stable blood sugar levels. Unlike most popular “reverse diabetes” books, Bernstein does not promise to “cure” anything. His aim is for diabetics to maintain steady, healthy blood glucose levels through the use of insulin (for Type 1 diabetics), medications and diet. Although it sounds like a simple enough plan, it is one that many diabetics have a difficult time sticking to, due to the restricted diet and meticulous observance of one’s own blood sugar levels required. Although Dr. Bernstein has a reputation in the medical field of being controversial, his methods are not far off from what most Doctors would probably recommend, if they spent enough time with their patients. The main criticism that Dr. Bernstein has with most treatment plans is that patients are rarely given the full attention of their physician and are simply prescribed the latest prescription wonder drug, without much regard for maintaining healthy blood glucose levels. He notes at several points in the book how he usually spends at least a full day with his patients on their first visit, in order to custom design them a meal plan and train them to properly follow his plan. Obviously, most people can not afford (nor would it be practical) to use Dr. Bernstein as their personal physician. However, strict adherence to the directions in the book, as well as a great deal of self-discipline, should help the majority of diabetics maintain their blood glucose at reasonable levels. Other things that set Dr. Bernstein’s methods apart from the majority of diabetes treatment programs today is his recommended use of stimulant drugs to treat obesity and allowance of relatively high amounts of fat and cholesterol in the diet. This includes the use of meat, eggs and dairy products, which most diabetes treatment plans seem to frown upon these days. Even if you do not buy into Dr. Bernstein’s methods of treating diabetes, or agree with his diet recommendations, the book is still well worth reading, due to the amount of space he dedicates to documenting modern research into diabetes treatment and the numerous, practical tips he gives that all diabetics should find of value. |
